Freight customers on 45-day terms, an ATO debt due now: funding can follow within 2 business days.
- Non-bank funding for transport businesses, available within 2 business days from some lenders once the file is complete
- Loans from $50K to $3M
- Fleet operators, road freight and courier companies, and groups of owner-drivers
- Overdue BAS balances, including PAYG withholding, the tax taken from wages, and GST, secured against trucks, trailers, a depot or property where available
- Documentation to suit the file: full-doc (tax returns), low-doc or alt-doc (BAS, bank statements or an accountant's letter instead), and no-doc where property secures the loan
Fuel costs have risen, your customers still pay in 45 days, and the ATO balance is due now. Diesel, rego, insurance and truck leases go out every week, while payment for loads already delivered arrives a month or two later. When the BAS slips in the middle of that, the balance builds fast. ATO tax debt finance for transport uses a business loan to settle the ATO balance, and the business then repays a lender on a fixed schedule. Lenders will consider it without security, or with trucks, trailers or a depot behind it. Joseph Farhat and his team work with freight and fleet operators facing this timing gap, and they will tell you quickly what lenders will consider.
Who we can help access finance
- ✓A regional fleet operator whose diesel bill has risen sharply this year, with major customers still paying on 60-day terms.
- ✓A road freight company two quarters behind on its BAS that has kept every truck and trailer lease payment up to date.
- ✓A courier business paying a team of contract drivers, with GST and wage withholding for its depot staff now overdue.
- ✓A group of owner-drivers trading under one business that missed instalments on an ATO payment plan, so the full overdue amount is now payable.
- ✓A logistics business whose largest customer has received an ATO garnishee notice, so payments due to the business are going to the ATO.
- ✓A family transport company with equity in its depot that would rather borrow against the site than keep carrying an ATO balance.
How ATO Tax Debt Finance for Transport Works
Fuel tax credits run through the same BAS as the tax you owe. A business claims them on its activity statement. On public roads, credits apply to business heavy vehicles with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) over 4.5 tonnes, and the road user charge reduces the credit. So while a BAS sits unlodged, the credits for that period are not received either, and the business carries the full fuel cost for longer. Credits also expire if they are not included in an assessment within the 4-year time limit, so ask your accountant to check whether any of yours are at risk.
The lender pays out the ATO balance, all of it or an agreed part, and the business makes fixed repayments over the term. Without security, non-bank lenders look at bank statements, turnover and customer contracts. Trucks, trailers, forklifts or a depot can support a larger amount. Some operators pair the tax-debt loan with invoice finance, which advances cash against freight invoices so the 30 to 60 day wait does not create the next BAS shortfall. While the debt stays with the ATO, it attracts the general interest charge (GIC), compounding daily, at about 11.5% a year for October to December 2026. GIC incurred since 1 July 2025 cannot be claimed as a tax deduction.
Joseph Farhat and his team review the ATO balance, your fleet list, your debtors and your current leases and loans, place the file with suitable lenders from a panel of 90+ bank, non-bank, and specialist lenders, and see it through to funding. Settled With Joe is a finance broker. We are not tax advisers or accountants, and your accountant confirms the tax figures. For a company, the director penalty notice (DPN) regime can make directors personally liable for unpaid PAYG withholding, GST and super guarantee charge. Where there is doubt that the business can pay its debts on time, an accountant or registered insolvency practitioner is the first call, before any new loan.

Frequently asked questions
What is ATO tax debt finance for transport businesses?
It is funding for freight, courier and fleet businesses to pay an overdue BAS balance, GST, PAYG withholding or income tax owed to the ATO. The lender sends the funds to the ATO, covering all or an agreed part of the balance, and the business repays the lender in fixed instalments. Nothing is written off: the business owes a lender on a set schedule with an end date, instead of an ATO balance that keeps growing.
Do I lose fuel tax credits if my BAS is late?
Fuel tax credits are claimed on the BAS, so they are not paid to you until that BAS is lodged. A credit expires if it is not included in an assessment within the 4-year credit time limit, and the ATO says lodging an amendment request does not preserve it. Your accountant can check whether any of your credits are near that limit, or affected in another way. Once your lodgements are current, the credits for those periods form part of the cash flow lenders look at.
Can trucks with finance still be security?
Often, yes. Where a truck or trailer is worth more than the amount still owing on it, a lender may accept that equity as security, or pay out the existing truck loan and lend against the vehicle again together with the tax debt. The current financier holds a security interest over the vehicle, so its payout figure and any consent it requires are part of the process. Leased vehicles are different, because the lease company owns them. For how vehicle and equipment loans work, see our [equipment finance](/commercial-finance-broker/equipment-asset-finance) page.
Can invoice finance clear the ATO debt?
Sometimes in part, but it usually works best alongside a term loan rather than instead of one. [Invoice finance](/commercial-finance-broker/invoice-finance) advances cash against freight invoices you have already issued, and the facility grows as you invoice more. It suits the ongoing gap between paying for fuel and being paid by customers. A large overdue ATO balance is a one-off amount, which a term loan repays over a set period. Many transport businesses use both: the loan clears the ATO now, and the invoice facility helps keep the next BAS on time. Joseph Farhat and his team can price both options together.
Does TPAR reporting affect my application?
Courier and road freight are among the industries covered by the taxable payments annual report (TPAR), which is due on 28 August each year. Whether your business needs to lodge one depends on the payments you make to contractors, and your accountant can confirm it. Lenders mainly want to see that lodgements are up to date, or that your accountant has a date to bring them up to date, so the full ATO position is known.
Can I get ATO tax debt finance for transport with low-doc or no-doc?
In many cases. A number of non-bank lenders work from the business account statements, the aged debtor report and the fleet list, without asking for full financials. That helps operators whose bookkeeping is a quarter or two behind. Expect a lender to ask for the BAS to be lodged first, or for your accountant to give a lodgement date, because the ATO figure must be final before funds are paid. No-doc is possible where a depot or other property is the security. Joseph Farhat and his team will tell you what each lender on the panel needs.
Do you work with borrowers with bad credit?
Yes, we do. A missed truck repayment, a default or an old judgment is not an automatic barrier, and there is no awkwardness in raising it with us. In transport, a listing often traces back to a customer who paid late or a stretch when fuel costs ran ahead of income. It says little about the contracts you are running today. Several lenders on our panel weigh your customer base, your debtor ledger and the fleet on offer more heavily than the credit file, and price for the risk rather than decline it. If you mention it at the start, we can approach a lender that suits the file first, rather than collecting enquiries on your credit file. Joseph Farhat and his team will tell you honestly what is achievable before you apply anywhere.
Why work with Settled With Joe to arrange your ATO tax debt finance for transport?
Because one review of your file takes the place of several applications. Most of the transport businesses we help are run by owners and directors with a deadline: a BAS several quarters behind, a payment plan that has fallen over, an ATO letter with a date on it, or a major customer stretching its terms while fuel and lease costs rise. We see these situations often, and there is no judgement in the conversation. What lenders care about is who your customers are, how reliably they pay, and the fleet or property you can offer. With 90+ bank, non-bank and specialist lenders on the panel, a well-documented transport business can be placed with a bank at a sharper rate, and a harder file still has options when the ATO needs paying within days. Settled With Joe is based in Sydney and works with transport operators across Australia. Joseph Farhat and his team will give you a straight, early answer on whether we can help and what can be done before your deadline.
Do you give financial advice?
No. We do not guide you on your finances, nor give financial advice. We focus on outcomes and solutions of presenting your unique scenario to the right lender so you can access funding in a timely and compliant manner.
